Sunday 24th August 2008
Bill has helped identify a photo from the archives of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey that depicts Marc Chagall and his wife Vava. The story of the identification of the photo can be read on The New York Times' website by clicking here.
The discovery of the photo sparked a worldwide hunt to indentify the two figures pictured - involving newspaper readers, historians, archivists, writers, and curators in the US and France - and Bill.
Part of the investigation involved Richard Havers (click here to visit Richard's site) who contact Bill with the photo. Bill says he studied the photo for days, and was convinced the photo depicted Marc Chagall and Vava.
Final confirmation came from Bella Meyer and Meret Meyer Graber, Chagall's granddaughters from his first wife, Bella Rosenfeld.
Bill said of the who photographic treasure hunt:
"It’s brilliant when some detective work comes together. Being an amateur archaeologist, I spend ages tracking down exactly what my finds are as well as the history behind them. I’ve always said that if I could have been anything, other than a bass player, I would have been an archivist or a curator of a museum."
