Friday 9th July 2010
On Saturday, May 29, and Bill was up early to pack and make the journey from Vitoria to Segovia as part of his Spanish tour with Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings. Bill boarded the tour bus by mid-morning, arriving in Segovia in the early afternoon – although the bus struggled with the steep hills near the hotel, so the band had to disembark and make the final leg on foot.
Once checked in to the La Casa Mudejar Hospederia hotel, Bill headed over to the venue to perform a sound check, then went to a restaurant in the town square for what Bill says was a wonderful dinner. Bill says that there was a wedding taking place, along with what he says was a crazy wedding car, which he took photos of.
Later, and with Bill in his stage clothes, the band walked to the Teatro Juan Bravo – the venue for the evening – taking to the stage at 8:30 to a standing, sold out audience that even saw three balconies surrounding the theatre packed full of fans.
The Rhythm Kings performed I Got A Woman (Georgie), Sweet Soul Music (Beverley), Chicken Shack Boogie (Geraint), Too Late (Terry), All Night Long (Bill), Melody (Georgie/Beverley), Jump Jive And Wail (Georgie), She’s Lookin’ Good (Beverley), Just Your Fool (Frank), It’s A Man’s World (Beverley), Hit The Road Jack (Georgie), That’s Better For Me Baby (Terry), I’ll Be Satisfied (Beverley), Three Cool Cats (Georgie), Johnny B Goode (Geraint), I Just Wanna Make Love To You (Beverley), Just For A Thrill (Georgie), and You Never Can Tell (Bill).
After each song the Rhythm Kings received massive applause, finally leaving the stage to more wonderful applause and demands for encores, which the band duly provided in the form of Booty Ooty (Georgie), Honky Tonk Women (Bill), and I Put A Spell On You (Beverley). Afterwards, Bill walked through the town square, constantly being stopped for photos and autographs by fans, before heading back to the hotel.
With the fantastic gig at the Teatro Juan Bravo behind him, Bill was up early on Sunday, May 30, to review lots of mentions of Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings tour, along with photos, in lots of Spanish papers. Bill also clocked several hot air balloons floating over the hotel, which he took photos of (photo shown), before boarding the tour bus to Santiago, arriving there at the Hotel Torres de Compostela in the late afternoon.
After struggling to get his computer to download emails – and having to give up – Bill and the rest of the Rhythm Kings headed to the Pabellon Multiusos venue to an audience of 600 fans. Bill was disappointed to see that the audience were pushed really far away from the stage and held back by barriers – and Bill says that the entire gig was far harder due to the distance of the audience. The audience worked hard to compensate, though, warmly welcoming the band and with great support as the band performed : I Got A Woman (Georgie), Sweet Soul Music (Beverley), Chicken Shack Boogie (Geraint), Too Late (Terry), All Night Long (Bill), Melody (Georgie/Beverley), Jump Jive And Wail (Georgie), She’s Lookin’ Good (Beverley), Just Your Fool (Frank), It’s A Man’s World (Beverley), Hit The Road Jack (Georgie), That’s Better For Me Baby (Terry), I’ll Be Satisfied (Beverley), Three Cool Cats (Georgie), Johnny B Goode (Geraint), I Just Wanna Make Love To You (Beverley), Just For A Thrill (Georgie), and You Never Can Tell (Bill).
Two encores followed - I Put A Spell On You (Beverley) and Honky Tonk Women (Bill) – before the band retired and Bill headed back to the hotel.
After the past two days, Bill then travelled to Ovideo on Monday, May 31, after finally managing to download his emails, and speaking to Suzanne in the morning who let Bill know that she and the girls had arrived safely in France. The bus arrived at the Gran Hotel in Oviedo in the afternoon, and Bill was greeted by a photographer from the local newspaper who took photos of Bill in the street. Bill then spent a relaxing afternoon and evening taking photos and chatting to the locals, as well as trying the traditional cider of the region and enjoying a great meal.
