Tuesday 12th January 2010
With snow and frost blanketing the country, Bill was encamped in Gedding continuing to plough through his massive Christmas card list and work on projects. But, on Monday, Bill gave over some of the day to media work to promotion the Rhythm Kings 2010 tour that the new Rhythm Kings album. Bill gave a 25 minute phone interview with Musikmarkt Magazine in Germany, followed by a 15 minute phone chat with SWR 1 Radio in Germany. In the evening, Bill spent time selecting photos relating to St Paul de Vence from his photo archive, before calling in a night in the early hours.
Busy day on Tuesday, December 15. After spending time working on photos, Bill had a series of guests arrive, including Gary Brooker and Frankie, as well as Mike and Gilbert, and finally Bill’s son and Serena joined the evening for dinner.
Wednesday, and in an omen of the coming weather, Bill woke to the moat at Gedding having frozen over, shortly followed by a light flurry of snow. Gilbert and Bill made a start on the worked needed for the proposed St Paul de Vence exhibition that Bill is planning for summer 2010, working through the day before breaking to watch the first day of the first cricket Test Match on TV between South Africa and England. Thursday followed a similar pattern, though the snow was heavier and Bill took some time out to capture some photos of the scene outside Gedding Hall. Bill also finalized a selection of photos for the St Paul de Vence exhibition – before Gilbert returned home to Nice, France, on Friday December 18.
With the snow piling up, Bill was nursing a sore tooth on Saturday, spending the day catching up on the sport ob TV. In the evening, Bill walked to St Mary’s Church in Gedding to attend the Christmas carol service – a gathering that was attended by around 40 of the local villagers, and saw plenty of mince pies and hot drinks afterwards.
By Monday, Bill organised the Christmas tree being put up in the entrance hall area, as well as decorations being put up throughout the house – then Bill travelled back from Gedding to London on Tuesday, December 22. Bill’s tooth had also been relentless in its pain, so Bill visited his dentist to have the tooth pulled – something he says was successful, even if he needed plenty of pain killers afterwards.
Suzanne and the girls arrived back from Los Angeles on Wednesday, December 23, and on Christmas Eve Bill and the entire family piled into the car and drove back to Gedding to spend Christmas – which, unsurprisingly was still quilted in snow. Masses of Christmas cards needed to have a home found for them, which took up a significant amount of Bill’s time in the afternoon, while Suzanne and the girls spent the afternoon wrapping gifts and decorating the Christmas tree. Christmas Day, says Bill, was a lazy affair – opening presents and generally relaxing, with the downtime continuing over Boxing Day and on until New Years Eve.
The last day in the decade saw Bill travel to London – Suzanne and the girls had travelled back to London a few days previously – before heading out with the family to The Ivy for dinner. After dinner, everyone drove to Jon Akevshi’s house to join them and their friends for drinks, before returning home just before midnight to welcome in the New Year together.
And, a happy new year for 2010 to all friends and fans of Bill Wyman and the Rhythm Kings.
